WTDC offers a half-day Nursery School Program (9:00am - 11:30am) for children aged 2.5 to 4 years of age. This program operates 10 months of the year from September to June. Children must be toilet trained.
The Nursery School Program is based on weekly child directed focuses and features “hands-on learning centres”. During our circle time, we explore selected themes through books, music, puppets, game and discussion.
The hands-on learning centres are designed to encourage and facilitate growth in all areas of child development. The centres include:
- Book Corner: a quiet area for children to read and enjoy books.
- Dramatic Centre: provides imaginative play, develops social and emotional skills, allows exploration of verbal and nonverbal means of communication, and expression of the many emotions a child may feel.
- Cognitive Area: provides tools such as puzzles to teach sequencing and shape recognition and encourages development of fine motor skills.
- Water Play and Sand Table: provides sensory activities.
- Creative Arts: provides an outlet for creative expression, as well as giving children an opportunity to work with their hands to develop fine motor skills.
The Nursery School Program also has access to an outdoor playground.
The Preschool//Kindergarten Program is a full-day program for children ages 2.5 to 6 years of age. The program operates 12 months per year from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, including a summer day camp in July and August. Children must be toilet trained.
Because WTDC is conveniently located in the same building as Hillcrest Community School, children are escorted to and from their classrooms in the morning or afternoon. Preschool children participate in the WTDC Nursery Program in the morning and join the rest of the group at lunch.
The Preschool/Kindergarten Program offers many different learning activities based on weekly focuses. Circle time is a group time where games, songs and stories are used to encourage discussion around the weekly topic. Activity areas include:
- Cognitive area: stimulates cognitive growth, including number and letter recognition, quantity, and size.
- Building/Block area: helps children gain gross motor skills using a variety of blocks.
- Sensory area: water, goop, foam, and more encourage children to explore with their hands, eyes and noses.
- Sand Table: provides a sensory experience.
- Dramatic Centre: stimulates cooperative play and imagination, as well as language and social skills.
- Language/Book area: for looking through a book or listening to music or a story tape.
- Creative Area: offers a daily creative activity such as painting, collage, cut and paste, drawing, sculpting etc; or, children may choose to create their own work by using materials from the “help yourself” shelf.
- Outdoor Play: Children participate in a variety of group or individual activities in our specially designed preschool playground complete with miniature basketball nets and a riding track around the play structure. In warm weather indoor activities may be brought outside.
All Kindergarten/Preschool children have a daily rest or quiet period.
